Reinventing Yourself as a Trader

The old bromide about the market is that the more things change, the more they stay the same. History does have a way of repeating itself with stocks; the cycles of boom and bust and the raw emotions of fear and greed will be around as long as there are traders, and the principles of risk management will never go out of vogue.

But it's also important to realize that the marketplace is in constant flux. Underlying trends ebb and flow based on consumer preferences, the health of the economy, and technological developments. Reliable patterns can shift overnight, replaced by new tendencies. And at the most fundamental level, your own mentality, goals, and risk tolerance may change over the months and years. With all this in mind, here are some suggestions for adapting to these changes.

- Don't be afraid to cast aside the status quo.

The market has a way of letting you know when your current strategies aren't working: you start losing money. If this happens consistently, it's a flashing neon signal that you need to rethink and retrench. Are there any new sectors you could be trading? Are you adhering to a directional trend that has ceased to exist? Have your favorite stocks stopped performing? What economic trends could you capitalize on? Are there any overseas markets worth looking at?

- Regularly revisit your goals.

If you've met with regular success in the market and feel ready to take a more aggressive approach, it may be time to expand your trading horizons. Does your profitability justify an increased tolerance for risk? Are you comfortable with the thought of entering more volatile stocks and sectors? There's nothing wrong with aiming for loftier targets - just remember that small, steady profits are better than losses.

- Take a small break from the market.

If you perceive a need to reinvent yourself but can't seem to find an updated winning approach, try stepping away for a week or two. This can provide you with a fresh perspective when you come back to the market, and reset your mind to thrive in the shifting trading environment.

Here's to profits,

                           MARKET SUMMARY
                   *****************************

The US indices closed in a mixed fashion on Tuesday as the markets responded to hotter inflation than expected in the Consumer Price Index report, and its potential impact on the Federal Reserve Bank's upcoming monetary policy decisions. In other economic news, small business optimism increased slightly but remains below its 48-year average. In equities, Coca-Cola (KO $60) and Marriot International (MAR $181) both topped earnings forecasts and delivered positive guidance, while fast-food holding company Restaurant Brands International (QSR $67) - owner of Burger King, Tim Hortons, Popeye and Firehouse Subs - fell short of profit expectations, but raised its quarterly dividend. Gold and treasury yields were higher, the USD/dollar and oil prices finished lower.

                   ***********************************

TRADER'S TIP: "The Fed"

When banks need to borrow money they go to the Federal Reserve, which sets the "discount interest rate" that member banks pay on the loans. Headed by well-known chairman Alan Greenspan, the "Fed" oversees twelve Federal Reserve Banks that in turn regulate the banks in their districts. The Federal Reserve makes sure that all banks maintain enough cash on hand to take care of their customers. They also sell and buy government securities to manage the US money supply. The Fed regularly trades currencies on the world market to support the US dollar, and warehouses gold for international agencies and foreign governments.

                   ***********************************

TRADER'S TIP: "What's Your Focus?"

Although most traders give the "enter" side of the trading equation a high priority, the "exit" side is far more important. Inexperienced market players often watch their positions go up, then slide all the way back down. It's easy to forget that paper profits only become "real" when they are converted to cash. Profitable exit strategies require active management, and deserve much more attention than entries.

CONSUMER CYCLICAL SECTOR

Nordstrom, Inc. (JWN: Consumer Cyclical/Department Stores) - SQUEEZE PLAY. Sometimes when Bulls and Bears face off in the market arena for a typical day-long battle, there is no clear winner. This is evident when the daily price range contracts to an unusually narrow state. JWN found itself in this condition on Tuesday when neither buyers or sellers were able to push ahead. This setup provides traders a chance to hop on board the next breakout - whether it's to the upside or down - with little risk of loss. To do this place a BUY order at 22.51 and a SELL short trigger at 20.94. When JWN moves outside of Tuesday's range, one of the orders will be filled. Once you hold a position of shares, cancel the unfilled order and place a 1.57 trailing stop. After you've got a 1.52 profit, tighten the stop to 0.79. JWN closed at 22.11 on Tuesday. Earnings Report Date: Mar 02, 2023. Beta: 2.23. Market-Cap: 3.539B. Optionable.

HEALTHCARE SECTOR

Avidity Biosciences, Inc. (RNA: Healthcare/Biotechnology) - NEW HIGH DIP. RNA's recent new 52-week high proves just how well this stock is performing. Sellers have pushed prices down the past few sessions, but Tuesday's rebound near support has given us an excellent BUY setup. A continuation of this latest bounce has the potential to push above the recent 52-week high and set a new one. Be ready to get on board if RNA moves up to the 24.65 level, and set a 2.24 trailing stop to control risk. Tighten the stop to 1.12 when you have banked a 2.84-point gain. Earnings Report Date: Feb 27, 2023. Beta: -0.01. Market-Cap: 1.571B. Optionable.

INDUSTRIALS SECTOR

Sun Country Airlines Holdings, Inc. (SNCY: Industrials/Airlines) - BULLISH BOUNCE. Everyone familiar with price charts knows that a stock tends to bounce its way higher rather than move in a straight line. The lower levels of these short-term rebounds offer a safe and often early entry into stocks that are in the process of establishing longer-term uptrends. SNCY's reaction to support on Tuesday created a Bullish Bounce setup with a BUY entry trigger at 21.34. Use a 2.05 trailing stop, which should work well with SNCY's typical daily range. Tighten it to 1.03 on a 1.26 profit. SNCY closed at 20.95 on Tuesday. Earnings Report Date: May 02, 2023. Beta: N/A. Market-Cap: 1.219B. Optionable.

ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd. (ZIM: Industrials/Marine Shipping) - BULLISH BOUNCE. Some people hear of a stock that's performing nicely and then buy it without any regard for timing the entry. This approach usually leaves money on the table, money that could just as well be added to profits. The Bullish Bounce setup provides a well timed entry and reduces exposure to risk by placing both the entry trigger and exit stop near the bottom of the bounce. We have an opportunity to use this approach with ZIM which met our setup criteria on Tuesday. The BUY trigger for this trade is at 21.58, and the trailing stop is sized at 1.99. Resize the stop to 1 upon collecting a 1.42 point gain. ZIM closed Tuesday at 21.20. Earnings Report Date: Mar 07, 2023. Beta: 2.12. Market-Cap: 2.545B. Optionable.

The Aaron's Company, Inc. (AAN: Industrials/Rental & Leasing Services) - BULLISH BOUNCE. Entering a position in the early stages of a bounce is great way to get on board an up-trending stock. The "Bullish Bounce" setup identifies probable candidates by evaluating the trading action that takes place near support levels. AAN's behavior on Tuesday could very well be a sign that a new bounce is underway. Place a BUY trigger at 15.2. In the event your trigger is met, also place a 0.99 trailing stop which can be trimmed down to 0.5 when you have a 0.92 profit. AAN closed Tuesday at 14.84. Earnings Report Date: Mar 01, 2023. Beta: 1.12. Market-Cap: 456.783M. Optionable.

                   ***********************************

Below are the stocks that have announced splits and have recently executed or will execute soon. There is generally a return to normal price behavior in the weeks following a split announcement in what we call a "Dormancy Phase." As the stock nears its split execution date it often moves into the "Pre-Split Run" stage where quick and sometimes dramatic gains can occur.
